For what "WE" (as hobbyists in THIS field) need, a 20Mhz dual channel + function generator is perfect...

A Tenma brand with just that can be had brand spanking new for 399(ish)

Borrow one? Unless you are always tuning and building custom stuff, there isn't much of a need to have your own.

Used units on eBay - 100 Mhz 2-channel is fine. Tektronix & H.P. are the 2 top choices. Here's a couple:
