Os?

98SE is probably one of the most stable Windows versions out there...

XP Pro has decent usability, but like any version of Windows you had better backup everything //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I learned this the hard way a few weeks ago...

I would say XP Pro, if you wanted to stay in Windows.

If you don't mind the steep learning curve, Linux is probably the "best" OS design out there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well the blue screen of death on windows 98 second edition is what i have and lately that thing has been killin my computer and ive had start completely over at least twice this year and i lost evreything and id like to stop that......

I like the old windows but if the new xp is easier and more reliable then ill upgrade id rather stick with windows too

I'd go with Win2000Pro or I would try one of the bootable Linux distros (Knoppix, Gnoppix, etc) and see if you like them. If most of what you do is music and internet, you shouldn't see much of a difference (except some newer video formats may not be supported)

well with that i want the most stable like i said the one i have now ive had to start all over and lost evreything more than once...... and blue screen of death happens evreyday

i would upgrade to XP just because you don't want to be left in the past... i think a new windows is coming out sometime soon, maybe? i don't remember where i heard that. either way, i think upgrading to 2000 would be waste since it is pretty old.

Windows 98se is the pinnacle of DOS based Windows operating systems. If you need support for dos games, it's the OS for you.

For just desktop work, word processing, internet, music, videos, and the like, LINUX is the OS for you. It's more stable that Windows (any version), has better online/networking, and is free. If you can't handle the learning curve, go with Windows 2000 Pro.

For gaming, Windows XP Pro is the new standard.

The *new* windows system is called Windows Vista. Beta versions are available. It follows the usual Microsoft tradition of stealing ideas from others (and patenting them), less and less efficient applications, killing off the competition with so called "improvements", and jacking the price higher and higher. There are 7 versions of it. The full version, the equivalent of XP Pro, is said to start at about $500 a pop. The smallest version will run about $100, but won't offer the benefits of things like new hardware support.

Sure if all you want to do is run office apps and surf. Linux just doesn't have a commercial app base big enough for me. Playing games is impossible in it as well. I never suggest it as a single solution for people unless their use of the PC is very limited. I dual boot myself. I use linux for most ordinary tasks to keep brushed up on it and play with, but need to keep windows on the machine for a lot of other tasks.

BTW Win98SE is not the most stable. It is a POS that uses a shitty core. NT kernels are much more robust and stable. Win2000 is the most stable, with XP Pro following on it. I give the nudge to XP Pro for it's ease of use and versatility toward multimedia(which is what most people are looking for). I hate the protect yourself from virii and internet meanies by switching to Linux or Mac pitch. It is easy to lay claims of being secure and stable when you are not a freaking target. Virus and hacks aren't developed for Linux or Mac that often because noone cares to beat a system 10% of the world uses at home. YAY I infected 10 home users with my I love mac virus YIPPPEEE!

Mac is a good OS though and has at least much more support from commercial software makers than Linux, but still lacks the compatibility that a Windows system has. Gaming is still virtually non-existant on Mac as well. Now when Mac system swith to the X86 structure over the next 2 years this may change for them. I also hope they offer their OS as a stand alone and allow people to build PCs and run their OS. Dual booting mac and windows would be very nice.

All in all, you should stick with audiophile advice, because stating the 98Se was the most stable OS by Microsoft will get you laughed out of any respected tech circle. Also, routine backups should be done on ANY OS. If you haven't had the the pleasure of Linux hanging and puking on you, then you haven't used it long enough to have an oppinion. It is not without it's bugs as well.
