it depends on the personnel. I haven't watched much of this season with Curry, but under Larry Brown and Rick Carlisle, Detroit generally plays man and doesn't switch off very often. Usually Prince plays off the ball handler and goes under the screen because he has the length to recover and effect an outside shot. Hamilton generally goes over the screen because he has the quickness to stay in front of the dribbler. You generally see Detroit collapse a lot on a dribbler because their rotations are generally excellent and can reach the perimeter shooters if the ball handler decides to go outside.Ok so how does Detroit normally defend the pick and roll?
Yea I agree. Like I said it depends on the personnel. You really can't answer such a broad question like how they defend the pick and roll. In 07 they did a lot of trapping against Cleveland in the ECF, but they rarely do a lot of trapping. Under Brown and Carlisle it was all about keeping the ball out of the paint and forcing them into long range jump shots and rotating defense. Since then you have seen more dribble penetration as Billups tried to go over the screen a lot and got burned a lot, and the rotation weren't as quick as they used to be.How Detroit defends the pick and roll depends on who is pick and rolling, and where they are. Some players they trap, some they force the ball handler to get the ball out of his hands, some they simply deny the ball to the big, etc. For example, you don't go over the pick with a guy like Chris Paul unless the pick happens right at the sidelines and your big man can get a trap started. Otherwise he'll step by the big-man and he's on his way to the rack.
why would you take it to the rack? if that happened in a game that becomes in effect a 5 on 3 or 5 on 4 with the picker/big man more than likely rolling to the basket? How Detroit defends the pick and roll depends on who is pick and rolling, and where they are. Well look at the example I gave. Typical NO pick and roll is either Chandler and Paul, or West and Paul. Chandler and Paul works out much the way you describe it, except Chandler rolls to the far-side of the basket and Paul drives to the near-side. When they do Paul and West, it is more often Paul driving far-side or down the middle and then dishing to West going near-side, West at the elbow, or West closer to the baseline from 10-18 ft.why would you take it to the rack? if that happened in a game that becomes in effect a 5 on 3 or 5 on 4 with the picker/big man more than likely rolling to the basket?
Detroit got burned when they trapped and he kicked it out to boobie. With the Pistons current lineup, you could probably match Prince on Ben Wallace and Hamilton on James and bring Prince on the double team. Only thing you'd have to watch for is a lob or a pass to a cutting Ben Wallace. Ben isn't going to be knocking down jumpers. Now Cleveland has even more consistent perimeter shooters so it's even harder to defend the pick and roll against them. Mo Williams lit up Detroit in their last game, but James was something like 8-21 so they did a good job keeping James out of the paint but surrendered the 3 ball to Williams.I think trapping against Cleveland is more dangerous now than it has ever been. I say let Lebron take 20+ ft jump shots, don't give up the easy 3's to players on the wing, and make sure that, if you're going to double Lebron or bring help, get there early. Even the best big men in the league have a hard time stopping LBJ once he accelerates towards the basket.
When playing the pick and roll against them, deny the pass to the big out of the pick. Let LBJ roll parallel to the baseline; when he decides to drive, you can angle him toward the sidelines. Either way, a lot easier said than done.
