Odd smell

I run Type R 12's with between 1200-1800w rms (depending on how many I'm running) each and they do get smelly, but turn them down when it happens and you'll be fine. It is the voice coils heating up, every sub does it, they just have different limits. Type R's have a small vc (2") so they heat up pretty quickly, but they have good cooling too so if you're not ridiculous with it, then it won't be a problem. You are definitely not overpowering them so don't worry about that...although the method you used for setting your gains isn't accurate. Music is way too dynamic to accurately set gains with, do it with a 50hz tone if you are gonna do it at all. I don't believe in setting gains by meter personally I go by ear as I have for the past 16yrs...but that's a personal choice.

Its possible that your enclosure is part of the problem or you're expecting too much from a single ten. Having more cone surface would allow you to play it louder without putting as much of a strain on the sub(s).

That's the answer I was waiting for. Thank you very much. As I've said, I've no problem at all when playing normal music, it's just when playing really hard bass tests. It happens maximum 2-3 minutes per day, I don't want to become deaf either.

My case is the following one:

On the picture, it's the old sub from 2003. It played really great with my old MRP-M350 during 6 years, but it finally died and it was time to get the new generation one (the gray cover didn't fit perfectly at all with that new generation sub but I modded it a little bit).

My trunk has limited space, I would like to get a 12" but I'm not sure I can fit a ported box here (Yaris hatchback) and not sure a sealed enclosure would play as much as a 10" ported. With my PDX-1.1000, I also have the choise to take a Type-X, that would probably resolve any heating problem, but I don't want to change my alternator or to buy a battery to power it.
