Odd excursion question.

The other day I installed a system for a kid who bought an amp from me (for more than I bought it for at Best Buy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif )

The amp was an Insignia 1000 watt (1000 watts, yeah right, not even close.)

I bought it one day, hooked it up in my car, tested it on a pair of crap Duals I had laying around in a box (they were free, don't hate me for using Duals, lol). Sold the amp to the kid for $10 more than I paid for it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Anyways, the Duals both hit with the same excursion (not much, lol). However, when I hooked up the amp to his 2 old school 12" MTX Blue Thunder subs he had, one hit with a very noticeable difference in excursion.

I connected each one separately and there wasn't an audible (to my ear) change in sound level, but it made me wonder what the hell was going on with them.

He checked the balance on the receiver and it was equal, so one wasn't getting more signal.

Might one be nearer to blowing or something from this? I'm just kind of curious what would cause this.

The subs were pretty close to this one:

I didn't ask for any money for my time installing so I didn't feel too bad.

He still got it for cheaper than it's listed for sale in the store (price matched to online store.)

Meh, so sue me.

Yup they were. It was a weird enclosure with if I remember right, 2 4" speakers and 2 tweeters, aswell. I don't know if they were wired to the woofers, though. There were 2 separate terminals, aswell (left and right)

Maybe one sub is wired parallel, the other is series? If they're DVCs that is?

Or maybe one's 4 ohm, the other is 2 ohm? If one had been blown and replaced? I'd check the impedance of each speaker separately. Also disconnect any of those other speakers, they could be interfering somehow.

Lots of variables going on.

There's two tube ports, one on each side. I'm not sure if there's an internal divider.

Next time I see him I'll see if he has some time to let me pop them out and check impedance / unhook those dumb little speakers.

I'm guessing they're not DVC, not the high quality style woofer I'd associate with having that option.

One could be out of phase, try reversing one set of wires. That is an old school full range box, lOl usually used in late 80's truck, hatchbacks and jeeps, I lived them well, hahha! Polo..
