Here I'll help a bit. designing a box with a octagon port is the same as designing a box with a square port, round port, dick shaped port, etc. find the area of the octagon and go from there.

To obtain the area of a regular octagon (equal sides) use this formula.

Area = a^2( 2 + 2√2 )

a= length of one equal side

Note:

"a" will be the length of the side on the inside of the port, when determining the displacement "a" would be the length of the side on the outside.

Wow, a thread about the Octoport!! Cool //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

I came up with the Octoport as a way to have a flared port that I could build to any diameter and length I needed. I could also use left over wood instead of buying 6" aeros at $37 a pop. By making it myself I can control port diameter, flare radius, overall flare size, etc...

I also like to be creative and come up with new/ better ways to do things. I'm not interested in copying what everyone else does...successful or not.

To answer you questions about what is louder....in my personal testing the Octo was around 2.5 db louder than a rectangle port with the same tuning. I can't do a direct comparison against a normal PSP aero because they only go up to 6" and all the Octo's I've built were larger than that. I did test vs. a 10" tube with custom flares and the Octo was a couple of tenths up.

I'm not going into how to build them since the way I do it has a lot of steps and most people are never gonna bother anyway.

I have also built a removable version also so I can switch tuning for SPL or daily. Here is a pic of a very loud SPL box for (2) 15's. Does a 154 legal with (1) 5k amp for one of my customers.

A pic of a finished version. This one was doing 149.8 legal off only 2500w clamped watts.

PV audio should have a good answer for this. he is very smart on airflow and wat not.
pv audio?

The only difference is that instead of listen to second hand stories, I actually like reading books on theory. While theory is good, such as how ported boxes actually work physically, real world experience and tricks can trump theory. And besides, spltuscon actually builds those for income, so listen to him on the octagon port //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

You could try to make the port longer, but there might be other reasons with the box won't extend lower, or even the sub. You'd have to reverse...
