Obsidian Audio question

The sub can handle over double rated power just fine. The ap amp makes dirty power. If it was clean the sub would still be alive.
clamp 1200watts on one and see how long it will last. I'm in the process of reconing 10 OA 18's because of too much power. They rate them at 600rms for a reason...

That could have been b/c people clipping the signal. The sub we clamped was taking around 1300-1400 wrms just fine on clean power. Which is also a little over double rated power. Coils looked fine afterwards.

yes he did play a clipped song, live and learn. Was already on the ragged edge with power so that was all it took.

For short bursts I could see the power you're throwing at it under ideal conditions but the average user will try to play super low, probably below tuning, voltage will drop, signal will clip...sub will go poof.

Considering he designed the subs, I think he knows best what they can and can't handle. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
A few hundred watts over RMS in a daily application is fine.. Much more than that is just asking for trouble. From my experience the OAs are pretty effecient and don't need tons of power to do what they are intended to do.

I emailed someone from Obsidian to see what they recommend but never got a reply
I dont think any of the companies will ever tell you to run more power than they are rated for. Many subs are somewhat underrated so when stupid people use their gain as a volume knob, the sub lasts a little longer.

True, I 100% agree

Ive got 1 OA 15d2 on an american bass hd 2500, and its getting all of it. Suppose to be around 1250 watts. it barely gets warm and only smells if there is a distorted signal. hits hard, clean, and deep. OA FTW
