you can hear it distorting if your ear is trained well.. if you get a dmm, you set the gain according to the tutorial in the references section.
you can smell your subs playing on a reg basis?the sub aint burnt. all subs get warm or hot sometime or another.

Not all coils are copper even new. Color isnt a way to tell.If your so sure the sub is fine go take it out of the box and push the cone up from underneath and look into the cooling vents and see if the coil is still shiny copper or a burnt looking purplish/black color getting darker towards the bottom of the windings.
ok let me re phrase that a different color then the top shifting half way down the coil darkening towards the end or bottom of the coil. I have seen quite a few that still read perfect on a dmm but the coils had obviously been exposed to high levels of clipping. Not all coils are copper even new. Color isnt a way to tell.
You sound as if it is the sub's fault. They are very good subs and handle power better than most in their power range. What you are saying is you need a sub with higher power handling to deal with the power you are using. It has absolutely nothing to do with "your kind of daily playing". If you are having problems with the OA , it is likely due to box design (port area, placement, etc.) and quality of the signal.I have the OA15. For the first month or so, mine stunk like ****. Its a very stinky glue. The sub is not dead...lol
I can get mine to heat up in about 2 minutes but I am running 965 clamped watts to it. This is why I will be getting rid of my OA and switching to Atomic. I like OA, they get loud, work great for burping. But I just don't feel they are made for my kind of daily playing.
So I trip you out??? I didn't say it was the subs fault. I actually complimented the sub. It gets loud. But if you plan on putting anything over 600 watts on it, they get warm quick. My enclosure was built to OA's specs. My amp was set using an O'scope. I took a chance on a lower power rated sub because of the PRICE. It did exactly what I expected, a 143.2.You sound as if it is the sub's fault. They are very good subs and handle power better than most in their power range. Your kind trip me out.
If you trust CarToys, then yes go to them and ask them to set your amps. However, theres a chance they are gonna charge you for their time.So. I have to buy a DMM, I don't have any other choice? I can't go to cartoys and ask them to set my amp correctly, or an audio shop? No other options besides actually buying one?
