Noob Needs a shove in the right direction~ 88 volvo 240 dl

I have a 1988 volvo 240 dl i just picked up last night for a daily driver. I want some better quality then what i have. I had one 10 years ago and have a hazy memory. This one differs in a few ways. My old one had 6x9s in the back shelf. The new one has no speakers in the back at all only has 2 speakers up front. Also i think but could be wrong the head unit location is slightly different. Needing some help planning this out. I dont need to go all out as this is my daily driver i just would like some better quality. I am thinking new head unit, new 4 inch speakers in the front door. And new 6x9's in the shelf. I will have to run wire to the shelf as for some reason this one didnt have speakers in the rear. (Maybe some speakers in the back door but gonna see how this works first.

What do you guys think of Kenwood Excelon KDC-X494 ? I want a head unit that can play off a thumb drive (flash Drive) Does anyone know if you can change the display from blue or if your stuck with it?

Also i need recommendations for speakers in the front and shelf. And anything else i may need would be awesome to suggest.

Sorry this post is half put together, i got to get ready for work and just trying to figure out what to buy.

Meant to add what do you recommend for wiring for running wires to the trunk for the shelf?

my friend had a car similar to this, should be 3's in the rear doors and nothing on the shelf. these were horrible stock stereo systems so rip it all out and start fresh... your gona have too.
