Noise Problem

Good day,

I just installed my HU, and I seem to have a noise problem im my back speakers. My dad says it is because the +wire that runs from the battery to the Hu is too close to the Distributer Cap and spark plug wires. I should not that the noise does seem to get lower and louder and the engine runs faster or slows down. Its at the loudest point when the engine is At idle. BTW I drive a 70 chevelle. Any help in fixing my problem will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, i believe just the plug wires and the spark plugs.. Is there a way or a product I can apply to them so they are not creating that interfearence?

There are 'noise suppressors' you might try.. but you could also see about running the power wire on a different route, say along the wheel well to the fire-wall.. find someplace to put it through on the side so you don't go near the cap/wires..

note, I'm not positive that noise suppressors are exactly what you want... but I think that's them.. anything that is designed to go inline on your power wire as a filter is what you would be looking for.. read some specs/applications for noise suppressors and see if that's what you would need..

well, if all of your signal wires are separated from your power wires and you don't actually have the performance ignition sytem, then try regrounding your h/u....

Okay well Heres what i tested. I got a little bit longer cable and ran it the other way to the firewall. The problem is this My battery is located on the front right side. There is a part in the firewall for running more wires my guess is it was for a choke and other old mods. However the whole is about 6 inches from the distrubution cap and wires. I was running the +cable so it was only about an inch away. The results were when ran so the +cable was only an inch away the noise from the speakers was so bad i didnt even want to listen to them, when ran the long way around so the + line was about 6 -7 inches away i could listen to the stereo with almost no odd noises. So i guess my only real options are the nosie killers. or run my cable a different way which im not sure is even an option.

Well, it's an older car.. is there any reason you don't want to punch a new hole in the firewall near the edge/bottomish on the side where the battery is? just keep it a kind of small hole and try to wrap that part of the wire in rubber or something so it doesn't get cut, and silicone the heck out of it.. *shrug* You can also get rubber gromets of various sizes, you might use one of those.. or see if you have an existing rubber seal in that neighborhood, put a tiny slit in it and pass the wire..
