No sounds from speakers

I was wondering if anybody here could help me with my problem. My problem is this. Yesterday as I turned on my car, no sound came from my front and back speakers. My head unit turned on as usual and my subs were working just fine, its just the front and back speakers. I know its not the head unit because I checked the wiring and even put in another one, but the same thing happens. The subs and head unit both work perfectly fine but nothing from the speakers. By the way, all speakers are stock. Whats the problem?

What kind of vehicle? You may have a blown speaker, a shorted speaker wire, or a factory amplifier problem.

i have a 97 chevy malibu. i dont think its a blown speaker because all of them dont work, but the other two are definite possibilities. how would i go about checking the other two?

A blown speaker with a shorted voice coil can have the same effect as a shorted speaker wire, and shut down the head unit's internal amplifier.

It's unlikely you have a factory amp.

The easiest troubleshooting would be with a multimeter. Disconnect the head unit then test the resistance between the positive and negative wire of each speaker (at the head unit location). If any show a resistance of less than about 3 ohms, there's a problem. If that doesn't turn anything up, test resistance between each speaker wire and the chassis ground wire. There should be no continuity at all; if there is, it's a sign of a shorted speaker wire.

If you don't have a multimeter, disconnect all the speakers then hook them up again one at a time and see if the head unit works. If it doesn't work with the first speaker you try, disconnect it and try a different speaker. You should be able to identify the speaker that's shutting the head unit down.

Also, look for broken connections or bare wires behind the head unit. If you had a connection come apart and a bare wire touching metal, it would cause your problem.
