no AM from OEM head unit

I have a Suzuki SX4 with the OEM Clarion head unit PS-3023K-A. Recently, the AM started acting funny with the volume reducing itself so that I had to tur the volume all the way up to get any sound. then the sound went out completly. I figured the unit had reached its time and bought a new head unit. Well the same thing happened within 1 week. Now here is the head scratcher. All other inputs FM, XM, CD, Aux work normally with normal volume and volume control. On both units!!. in addition I noticed that when on AM the scan feature will not stop on any station at all. As if the antenna input has failed. just for kicks I plugged in an old mast antenna i had and no change. Now this vehicle does use an amplifier unit in the antenna base on the car. I am wondering if that sould be the issue here.

Anyone have a thought on this? the part that has me baffled is the fact that only AM is affected, all the other inouts still work normally.

it's interesting that AM faded out and then didn't work for a replacement unit. that points to an antenna issue and if the factory antenna has an amplifier - are you sure that amplifier still has power? the blue wire on the head unit is intended to power the antenna.
