Nightshade v.2 Production Motor

They don't look as monstrous without the shorting ring. Does having the ring off affect the xmax or xmech at all? What is the weight on the 15?
It doesn't effect either of those parameters - it was a shorting ring to reduce inductance primarily. On a Z v.2 you need it as a spacer to add a triple joint ring if the application calls for it -- on the NS v.2 the ring can fit down in the gap on rearward stroke. Typically Z v.2 don't need the triple joint rings -- but if someone needs one for their application we can space the basket up with other methods.

We found that it could actually make inductance too low for some applications (higher powered daily mostly) so ended up removing it on both the Z v.2 and NS v.2 -- both drivers still feature large internal shorting rings, which are more critical on over-hung anyway.

you said this ns v2 is a more daily driver? I have my SAZ 2000d, and i still have yet to pick a sub/subs to go with it. obviously this is just a first set up, more power will probably follow in a year or so, but for now, id like to stick with sundown. if the nightshade was a solid musically low end monster, then id definitely consider and 18 if it would do well on that power.

i just always saw the NS's as spl competition subs. please tell me im wrong lol it would be the shit to go with an 18, and keep my stereo in the sundown family. and not some fi stuff. (thinkin fi q's. dont hate me) lol

The Nightshades have always been a great daily sub -- the v.2 is an even better daily sub than before as it has more low end extension, lower distortion, and much higher power handling.

I am developing "SPL" coils for the NS v.2 -- but the standard coil setup is great daily.

what i like to hear //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif i trust sundown. loveeee the shit out of my amp. so if i could roll with just 1 18 nightshade id be so happy.

are the recommendations for box sizes/tuning going to stay the same? or do you suggest something else?

just curious, i know you suggest 1500 watts per nightshade. but i always here ppl putting a whole lot more to one. say you did go 1k- 1500 watts per sub, would you still get the output im always hearing about? would 2 15's hit hard on just an saz 2000d? or would they barely move lol?

One of the best qualities about the NightShade is it's ability to get loud off very little power. Even though the v.2 is rated for 2kw it'll get plenty loud off only 1-1.5kw. We were able to get a 150.3db legal in my truck with a pair of stock NS v.2 15"s off only 1800w of clamped power. Not bad considering these subs are built to handle 10kw burps with ease.

i think it was your alignment.. with that much moving mass its just not going to be efficient.. good motor strength and low power compression will make those suckers WHALE...
May be surprised at how efficient they are -- within a few tenths (margin of error) of the v.1 Nightshade with ~90 grams more MMS. Also not far behind the Z v.2 which has ~150 grams less MMS.

My alignment with only one 15 can pretty well replicate Derrick's results per watt - so it's not just him //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
