Howdy folks! I joined the forum to research component speakers and find some good authorized vendors. I am doing piece mill upgrades to a work in progress on my '15 WRX. I have very little access to listening to anything in person so I generally read alot and then roll the dice.

The webz are a scary place with cheap knock-offs and shady characters, so I thought research on this forum might help me make good decisions.

I currently have a Kenwood DDX 470 HU, JL audio TR650 components (front) with cheap Quart PVI coaxials for rear fill. I have the speakers amped through a soundstream pn.520d 4 channel amp at 4 ohms (under drivers seat) . I have another amp under the passenger seat driving a 12" ported sub in the trunk @ 300 watts RMS.

I have played with EQ settings and crossovers until the cows come home but I just can't improve the vocals and imaging up front. I realize imaging is affected by speaker positioning but I am thinking I might want to invest in better components first.

The vocals from the JL's are clear but are subdued and I can't bring them up in front of the instruments until I really start pushing more power. Interesting though is that with the front doors open I get much better SQ. Kind of makes it difficult to drive though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I thought a solid performing set of components with better crossover points might help.

I have been considering Hertz HSK 165, Focal 165 AS,

I am open to suggestions.

BTW, I am really one of those people who listens to practically everything //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

thanks

Nice man. What sub? I'm sorta in the paradise hills part of Albuquerque
I kind of cheaped out on the sub with a Belva 12" base package. 600 watts peak 300 RMS. It actually fills in the lower end quite well. I am just needing a better front stage now. I live between Hatch and Truth or Consequences.

Component swap wont help at all. You need to add a digital sound processor for imaging.

Thanks folks for the welcome.

Jeffdachef, I am hearing ya. Before I spend some serious coin on a DSP I wanted to play with a better set of comps and speaker placement/positioning.

I went with my gut and just ordered some Focal PS 165 F's. I will report back.

Installed the Focal PS 165 F's today. WOW! They really have exceptional sound quality. I added additional dampening and sealed the doors better. I changed the physical alignment of the woofers slightly angling them up and back by adding rubber shims under the lower front portions of my spacers.

Overall I improved the imaging quite a bit.. I will play a bit more with the dash tweeters and call it good for now.

Loving the new Focal Flax sound.
