I just snagged the brand new AA 18 off of this forum and was wondering what type of enclosure everyone recommends?

I listen to mainly TOOL, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, Dream Theater, etc, etc (some chemical brothers...shit lk that), (usually no rap, but sometimes I make exceptions)

THIS IS A DAILY DRIVER, it will not be entered in any SPL competitions. It is going inside a 2001 Jetta GLS, I've got a D5 1200.1 for power (1450-1500 watts @ 1ohm).

I've got about 5 cubic feet after displacement and all that crap...so here are my options

5 cubic feet tuned to 28hz

5 cubic feet to tuned to 32hz

5 cubic feet sealed/polyfill/equalized flat to 15hz

5 cubic feet sealed/polyfill/equalized flat to 30hz

I definitely say ported. How much port area can you fit? 5 cubes the max you can do?

I'm running each of mine in 8 cubes NET with 80 square inches of port per sub tuned to about 30. Sound quality is great and it can get really loud.

I can fit a little bit more...but I want SOME trunk space left...lol

I can get about 38-39" wide, ~19" tall (21" in some areas), and about 22" before I get to the seats (but about 12" from the front of the box it starts sloping down at a 45* angle) and I want to fit my amps (D7056 and D51200.1 on the back of the box)

all in all Im gonna say 38 x 18 x 12 = 4.8 cubic feet, then ive got about 38 x 18 x 8 (45* angle triangle tho...) so about 1.58 cubic feet there

~6.4 cubic feet is about as big as Ill go (thats about 2/3 of my trunk space)... but I have to take in account displacement of the sub and im using 3/4" mdf and that oughta chop off some of the space within

I think 6.5 NET would be about perfect. With 5 cubes, I think the low end might suffer just a little bit and might end up with a small peak near 50 hz, but it would probably still sound really awesome and get plenty loud. I'm thinking about re-doing mine with 6.5 per sub, but more port area. 8 cubes each might have been slight overkill for a car audio setup.

I would definitely squeeze as much air space into your box design as you can and still have trunk space.

How much volume can I gain by adding polyfill?

Would the ported design be louder across the entire power band or just tuning frequency? ...I dont want a huge peak in the frequency response

Im thinking about placing a sheet of aluminum on the front and back of the box (I wont be able to carpet it...since Im going to have to build it in the car) and powdercoating it black or a deep blue. Anybody think that would look good? or a little too flashy?

Has anybody ever built an enclosure that could be switched from ported to sealed?

How many 6" Aeroports would I need for 28-32hz? Would it be possible to seal them up if I decided I liked sealed better?

Would I get phasing problems with the 18 facing the rear of the car?
