So basically you are saying high excursion is only good for SPL? I disagree. Its in the transient nature of music that high excursion capabilities can be utilized.
Its actually most SPL oriented subs these days that dont bother competing in the 'excursion wars'. Its the SPL guys that burp a single note, very near enclosure tuning, where excursion is at a minimum. In this situation, thermal limits of the driver are much more likely to be met before mechanical limits.
I didn't say that at all. Its all in the intentions of the design(er). I built a nice 18" unit that had a 4" coil and 7" spider. that combination gave me a swing of ~10mm, which was well within my planned design parameters. Sounded darn good too. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
What I find funny is how quickly people draw conclusions based on looks alone. 'Oh, it has a big coil and magnet stack - it *must* be for badass SPL then...'. Since we know little of the unit outside of seeing it in a picture, there is absolutely no way to determine what application it was designed for.
