Net volume question

When designing a ported box, what are good net volumes to build at for 10", 12", 15", etc.? I've heard 2.5ft^3 for 12" is a good range at around 33-40in^2 port area to have a good sound, but I don't know if that's for each sub or for high performance or what. Also what does a larger or smaller net volume do to the bass response to the system?

Completely, utterly and totally depends on the specific subwoofer in question. You can't just say "I have a 12" sub, so I'll build the enclosure 2.5cuft net". It is going to vary subwoofer to subwoofer.

I realize that, so I'm assuming there must be an equation to determine the net volume of a sub based on the T/S parameters. My first post was kinda dumb because I didn't have a lot of time to think it over, but I just wanted to get my point across. The reason why I'm asking is that I'm going to be building and designing a good amount of boxes in the near future for local people and I don't feel like annoying anyone by asking the net volume and port area for each different sub, ya know?
