Need help

I built sealed encloser for my JL 10w3v3-2 alittle over specs at 1.12 cu ft. I have a JL audio 500/1 amp powering it! My gains and db boost is set at half way marks! Seems like sub is bottoming out! It is in a Montero! Should I go PORTED??? I am looking for alittle more! Dont get me wrong, it does sound great as is,but I feel I can do better with what Im working with! Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm no expert... hell im a drunk a-hole on the interweb drinking cheap beer.... BUT... google'd JL 10w3v3-2 and got specs saying 0.625 cu. A little over specs is a bullshit statement. Now you are close to a ported box size but then you'd have to calculate the port volume and tuning. Hell by the time you put that much work into it you may as well do it right with 1.25cu + port volume at a tuned freq. good for that sub / your pref.

In short, no **** it's sounding like it's bottoming out. Either port it and be happy with a half-*** job or build a totally new sealed or ported box... to the ******* specs, not some willy nilly what the **** ever size you feel like.

turn bass boost off and tune it properly (gain and head unit settings) then if you find it's not enough" look at getting a ported box made

A ported box will do better but the sealed one you built shouldn't be causing the driver to bottom out. Even though it's large, it still provides more acoustical suspension than a ported box and that woofer is fine in a ported enclosure.

So...

How did you set the gain? Half way doesn't mean anything, because half way could be twice as much as it should be.

Do you know the head unit's clipping level and if so, did you gain set at that level, with a scope, a DD-1 or a voltage meter? If not... see above.

And as has been mentioned, are you using bass boost? If so, did you set it before you set the gain and did you turn it up more than half way?

Also.... what frequency is the crossover on your amp set at?
