Need Help with Ford premium Sound

Hey;

I have a 1995 Ford Taurus GL and I installed the Premium sound in it.

The problem I have is when I turn on the radio, it has little volume, or it pop[s, or the volume goes up and down.

So what I had checked is as follows:

1. Carefully wen't over all of the wiring both to and from the rear mounted amplifier, looks good to me.

2. Replaced the rear stock unit with another one and you hear sound now, but very little volume.

3. On the 8 sound output terminals on the premium radio proper, I get very little sound output when I hooked it up to a portable speaker.

So any ideas as to what is wrong?

Thanks

when you say premium sound what exactly do you mean. Is it the factory premium sound system? Did you swap out all the speakers and the factory amp that goes with it? Just taking a quick stab without knowing more it sounds like you just swapped out the head thinking it says "premium sound" but it is designed to work in conjunction with the factory amp so if you dont have the amp you get very little output.

Hey Crossover;

When I first got the car, it had standard Ford Cassette/AM?FM, not premium.

Then I decided to install the stock Ford Premium Sound system in it's entirety,and that included laying all the cabling front to rear , and the Standard Ford Amplifier in the trunk along with Ford Premium sound Cassette?AM/FM player. I have a 1995 Ford Taurus manual that I used in hooking up all of the wires and they appear correct.

ON the pinout on the output of the Ford Amplifier, it has logic mute, ground, power. They appear to work good.

I hope this explains the deal I have now and am trying to get it to work.

IN addition, I put a small speaker directly on the pinout of the current Premium Sound radio, but can't hear anything at all with the volume cranked.

For right now, I just want to get this stock Premium sound working. I had it working once for a short while about a decade ago.

Let me know what you think, and Thank You for the help. Tough to get that anymore.

I dont remember as 95 was a while ago but they may have used 2ohm speakers in that setup but you should be getting something with the volume cranked regardless of ohm load. Probably have faulty equipment. If it were me I would scrap the stock premium idea and go aftermarket. Way better results.

Crossover;

Appreciate the help. Can you list me a few suggestions of what you may have in mind as far as upgrades go? I am new to this and would like to hear what is good.

good statement. sound is very subjective to ones individual hearing. What sounds good to me might not sound good to you depending on what your ear likes to hear. There are lots of different speakers made up of many different things and they all have their own tonal quality to them. My suggestion is to go to a local stereo shop and just listen to some speakers and find out what you like. usually the most obvious difference in speakers tends to be what they make the tweeter out of, ie metal or soft dome.

as for a head unit just try and stay away from anything too cheap. Its usually cheap for a reason. the head unit choice really boils down to features and processing capabilities. I tend to be more of an alpine fan when it comes to head units and also speakers, but I have been for over a decade so I am a little biased.

But pretty much anything you do with a simple deck and 4 will sound better than the stock "premium sound" system. and if you are looking for a little more power to the speakers without having to break the bank and time on installation check out the alpine ktp-445u.
