need help with Autotek amp

[MAD MAX101 10+ year member]

i have an autotek 1400.1d hooked up to 2 12"s kicker L7's with a kenwood hu. i have the amp gain almost all the way up. when i crank it up, the amp does not get loud untill around 30 on the HU and the HU distorts out at like around 32. should i get an external 7 band eq i where i can control the bass and so i can crank the bass up more with the eq.... any advise would really help me out... thanks alot....
