So first of all let me tell you I'm a total noob at car audio so bare with me! I'm gonna have some money this Summer and I really wanna get a new sound system for my car (not a very big car). I really like JBL and I might look into getting some of those. Now I may be able to get a system from FLI ( http://www.fliaudio.co.uk/ ) for cheaper than JBL but I want to know if they're any good. Didn't find any reviews of them so I thought about asking here.

Being the noob that I am I also want to ask what amp I would need to run 2x 6"x9" speakers at around 100W RMS, two smaller ones (say 5") at around 70W RMS and a sub woofer with around 200W RMS. How many channels, what rated wattage, etc... for an amp, and are FLI amps any good (or JBL)?

One last thing... Which would you rather get as a stereo head unit Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, (FLI - they got cheap one with SD and USB slot)???

Thanks a real lot and sorry for the long post!!!

Haven't heard of FLI. You might post on one of the British car audio forums as they are a British company.

For power, you might consider using a four channel amp. Use the front channels to power the front speakers and bridge the rear channels to the sub. Use the head unit to power the 6x9's. In fact, since you are investing in a separate amplifier, a better use of it's power would be to install components for the front speakers.

JBL has a good reputation and should perform well.

My advice, as you are just starting out, is to take your time selecting your system and research the brands you are checking out. I spent way too much money on impulse buys when I first got into car audio.

my advice if you have to buy everything at different times upgrade mids and highs possibly a 4 channel amp at about 75x4 RMS not max depends on the speakers you get and run 6x9's and then run a component set up front then get a different amp for the sub

But will the head unit give enough power out to the 6x9s? And what about head units? Anyone with any opinion which of them is better?
Assuming you are running the 6x9s for the rear speakers, head unit power should be fine. I would actually suggest that you leave the stock rear speakers in for now and concentrate on aftermarket front speakers and an amplifier, especially if it's a smaller car. A good set of front speakers matched with an amplifier can get very loud with good sound quality. You may find you don't need rear speakers at all.

I checked out the FLI website. I won't say they aren't good as I never heard them, but comparing features to other brands I didn't see anything that set them apart. For a head unit, I would go with one of the more established brands like Pioneer or Kenwood. I would also lean towards the JBL amps and speakers if I was comparing the two. JBL is an established company with a good reputation for making quality gear.

Overall, you should take your time and research different brands. Check out the shops and shows and listen to as many systems as you can before you buy.

Are you planning on doing the install yourself?

Big deal.

Sound advice found in there...

So for now I think I've decided to go for just 2 front components with an amp. Everyone seems to like JBLs so that's what I'll go for. What do you think of these... http://www.ultimate.com.mt/product_info.jsp?product=345 (forget about the site and prices, it's from my country).

So do you think they're any good? I don't think I plan to install them myself, not very good with such stuff. As for the head unit, I'm undecided between Pioneer and Alpine. After I install these, I might decide to add a sub, but that comes later! Thanks for the help!

One more question... is it better to have an amp with a rated RMS wattage that is greater than the RMS wattage of the speakers, or is it better to have the speakers with more wattage than the amp?

better to have a more powerful amp than you need. This gives you what we call headroom and reduces the chance of sending a clipped signal to your speakersm which will destroy them.
