Alright, so I am in the market for buying a bike. I have about an $8500 budget give or take a few hundreds. I used to have a Suzuki GS500F, but that was my first bike, and it served it's purpose very well. I would like to step it up a bit, and get something with a bit more power. I like the GSX R750, but it's about $1000 out of my range. I thought about the SV1000S, but it's butt ugly and to thin to me. I have been told not to waste my money on the Katana 750, since it's slow as crap. I decided to go with a Suzuki, mainly because of the GSXR's. Any advice or bike's that you think I should consider would be helpful. Please keep my budget in mind also @ ($8500) + or - a few hundreds. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/graduate.gif.d982460be9f153bb54e5d4cb744f6ae8.gif

Saying everything mentions.

difference of the following compared to Katana- RACE ORIENTED

Frame

Subframe

Forks

Brakes

Engine

Clutch

etc..........

The gsx-r lines are lightened to the point where they can't get much lighter for the price. Race oriented

Engine is designed to be beaten upon, and revved into the skyy vigorously. And make peak power in the upper end.

Slipper Clutch..blahblahblah. It's made for the race track. The Katana is not.

What's the main difference between the GSXR600 and the Katana 750 besides compression ratio???
The GSXR600 will eat a Katana 750. The GSXR is faster, handles better, better brake set-up, high revving, better midrange pwr for running twisties/canyon roads.

GS500F to a GSXR1000 is a huge step up. I would go for a GSXR 600, YZF600R or Honda 600. IMO I would not recommend going from a GS500F to a 1000 of any brand. Not sayin' it cannot be down, but most people get stupid and the 1000 bits them in the ass. Todays 600 are potent machines. The GSXR 750 is amazing-hands down best all sport bike on the market and I am a yamaha fan.

A current model 600 will be a huge step up from your GS500F. Be careful do not get talked into something that will get you hurt or killed due to experience. I have ridden just about everything to come out. From Hybusa, TL1000, YZFR1LE, 636, 750 name it good chance I have gotten to through my leg over it. To give some Idea of my experience and what I have owned or own.

AMA Racing License 1996-1998. Ran total of 4 races with a buddies 600cc as privater, worked pits for his team.

1995 FZR600-First Street bike-sold after 6 years and 47,000 miles, all dirt bikes before this.

2000 Yamaha Roadstar-5 years 25,000 miles.Sold

2002 YZFR1-Sold 2005

2005 Harley Davidson Deuce-currently in the garage.

All in the garage:

2006 Banshee heavily modified

2005 Grizzly

2001 Blaster modified

This all my 2 cents and IMO, nothing else. Just be safe.

Nice I'll be going for that license in a few years

So far just 18yrs old with 2 years street bike riding experience and about a dozen track day sessions. Trying to get into the local race programs.

But def. step up to a 600 and not a 1000. As I think you are already aware of that.

Even older 750's kick hard.

Probably will end up just doing the GSXR600..........The Katana did look good for the price though, since I won't be doing any type of racing.

I dont get why people say this. I mean just use your head! Common sense people.......common sense. I had a 1100 Honda Hurricane as my first bike and only experience I ever had was dirt bikes and 4 wheelers, which you really cant compare. So was baby but fresh with the bike and learned on it and just rode smart. Really no bike is safe being you have to watch out for other people more than anything, unless you are power hungry and cant use that thing called common sense, but speed kills and all bikes can get fast or are fast..............fast enough to kill. Only reason I wouldnt get a bigger more powerful bike is if you are too small. Then check into the smaller bikes, but you said your first was a 500cc, so you could go bigger and be fine as long as you use your head. If your going to buy a bike just for speed, then all I can do is wish you the best of luck and hopefully you dont do something stupid.
