I was wondering if someone could help me out?

I love watching movies and listening to music in my bedroom... but I've had cheap systems, nothing to make me happy. I usually jump in my car to listen to music, and waste gas... just because it's the best I have.

Let's say I was on a budget of $500 for everything, what could you recommend?

$500 is pretty low for a decent 5.1 setup. I think you would be better starting with a stereo system and upgrading when you have the money. I would start off with a decent second-hand receiver (Yamaha RX-V or Denon) then try to find some decent second hand speakers.
