My week....

From a alpine type R to a, Eclipse 7524 (SP) to a Lightning Audio VC2 I finally made my choice.

So my alpine type R separated right where the VC to the cone was gains werent even half up, my dumbass friend stuck a screwdriver through the cone because it was blown already. BB wouldn't take it back. So I choked him and made him give me 100$ for my MTX. (He had a BB plan and upgraded to a Type R for me, he'll never see his 130$..)

Went to the local toys with noise and got an Eclipse 7524 for 250$$. Hooked it up and it was nailing the lows gains were not ever over half way. Going down the road and low and behold it blew pretty bad. Sounded like sand was in the coil or somthing. Took it back to toys with noise (reccomend them) and the guys there were nice enough to take a look at my install. They asked who did it and I was like "myself", they were like dang pretty **** clean.

So we figured out that my amp was putting out .03% THD. Not too good IMO, so they stepped up the sub for me free of cost. We started out with Rockford P3's. Only problem was every box that was opened there was a 10" in it instead of a 12". So never got to try the sub out. Their MSRP was 289$ for that sub. So they decided to give me a lightning audio strike VC2. (Retail is 350$). So I got that and they marked where my gains should be on my amp. I'm letting it break in for now, then I'll put it in the appropriate mark.

So all in all I got a 350$ sub for 250$.

Comparing it to the type R.. The LA stops the piss out of it. The lows are loud with a 40hz box, highs are louder the gains are only at 1/4 and with the alpine at 3/4 (correctly set) the LA is eating it like nothing. I can only imagie what the LA is going to be like when the gains are set to the appropriate position.

I don't understant the Type R hype..? LA is doing pretty well also.

All I gotta say is what a week.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

You do realize how little .03% is don't you. You would never in a million years hear .03% THD, the sub itself has well more than .03% THD.

Even 3% THD wouldn't be audible in the subbass region. And it surely wouldn't damage anything. Hell, the sub itself would still have more than 3% THD.

I hope the shop didn't agree with you that that was a "problem" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Break in = waste of time

I thought you said the gains where less than 1/2 with the Alpine //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

Most likely you went way below port tuning with out it crossed over properly and blew the hell out of it.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

LA had an LMT prototype, much along the lines of the RL-s...never made production, though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
wow, I never would of thought that, too bad it never went through

the gain only ajust the way the amp turns up with your radio, that will not determine how much power the amp puts out, all the way up or all the way down, its going to be just as loud, you will just have to turn your cd player up much higher if your gain is all the way down to reach maximum wattage, where is its all the way up, you will be at maximum power in just a few notches---

where the big issue is, im assuming you have a ported box, you very well could have your crossover frequency out of your ported boxes range, to hi and to low of notes can easily lead to loss of output and blown woofers, example, lets say your running a 45 hz tuned box, and have your amp crossovers set where they will play 25-30 hz tones, 1 your sub will not have too much out put cause the tune of the box is really high, the cutoff will be about 5-7 hz down, cause your sub you over exert, and since its already not playing right its going to heat up, and its all down hill from there, especailly on alot of newer woofers, they dont have very loud dostorted like i have heard in the past, so you really cant hear it, but you will defintly heat it up, which is the first cause of seperation of any kind, let alone, leading to burnt coils

they didn't set it up at all. never touched anything..

The more I think of it, 40hz is a lil high i guess and I was probably going below. The thing is is that my MTX would go down to 10 hz at full potential w/o bottoming out. Guess it was a better sub than I thought.

10 hz huh? hmmm

and also, how are you deciding where your amp is "correctly set" ? im guessing youre not using a dmm or o scope haha. i think youre turning them up higher than you should. circuit city probably had them where they should be and by turning them up youre just clipping the signal.

nice to hear you like the mtx and lightning though. never heard a higher model LA sub i might have to check one out

What if the HU doesn't output enough voltage to drive the amplifier to maximum output with the gain all the way down? Would you say that then, you would indeed be affecting the output of the amplifier with the gain?
