I paid $110 for it, he charged me that becuase its his first box he built and we already had a set price before he started building it... he wants more for the time and effort to make them.

Will I just take weatherstripping and run it along the outside of the cut just to make a tight fitting around the sub/box, is that correct?

Yes. I use high density foam weatherstripping.
