My Mercedes Benz diesel engine build.

About 3 weeks ago I bought a 1982 Merc. 300D Turbo Diesel from someone for less than 300.00. Everything worked good except the fact that the engine knocked really bad. He said he came down a hill too fast and bottomed out the oil pan and ran out of oil. Since then I have done quite a bit of work on it, and have taken some pics of the process for you guys to see. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'll guess I'll just start with some pics of the car. Not a gem by any means, but will work as a daily driver. The only major rust is on the driver side rear fender.

Took the oil pan off, here's what I found in it.

Bearing material. Not a good thing, but better than chunks of piston or rod I guess. This engine is weird because taking off the oil pan will not expose the whole bottom end, just two connecting rods and one main.

I'll update the next post with more progress, I have much more to go.

Pulled the motor out of the car, here are pics of the engine sitting on the floor.

Wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be to remove. From there I removed the bottom pan of the engine, then starting taking off rod and main caps. Just one rod bearing was spun and had hardly any bearing left, that was causing the knock. Here are pics of all the bearings.

Removed crankshaft, tested ok and I need to get it reground.

From here I plan to get the crank ground, new set of rod and main bearings, full inspection of top end, and one new connecting rod. I'm hoping that is all it will need to be running again. I will be sure to update whenever I get stuff done Until then, enjoy.

when you get it back fixed again i'd bring it by the old fawker that sold it to you and tell him a $10 bottle of Duralube got it running like new...he probably new there were metal; pieces from his last oil change.....since he made up that story...about the oil pan

The oil pan was dented up though....

Lack of oil would cause the bearing problem tho.. not sure if it was made up..

He seemed an honest guy, but you can't be sure. For the price I paid I expected something like this though.

That far left main looks awful. Lucky none of that bearing made its way into the bore. How many miles on it?

The main isn't nearly as bad as the far left rod bearing. Odometer says 133k, I think it has been swapped though. There is a dash cluster in the back seat that says 177k. Not sure.

nice build! you're making some good progress
Thanks, and back at you. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I haven't worked on it for like 2 weeks, because I need money for parts and I lack ambition. I need to clean it off and inspect the head and pistons. 65.00 to get the crank ground, 120.00 on new bearings, 120.00 for gaskets, and I need a new connecting rod.
