"That's what's really weird about the whole thing. It doesn't matter

what I'm doing at the particular time, but it will just randomly make

a kind of "restart click" and switch to a black screen like it was

before the bios screen, but it never makes it to that point and the

monitor switches off. I will then restart it, and it will scan my D:

hard drive for errors, find none, and move on to the windows screen.

At any point between the bios screen and windows, it will randomly do

the false restart thing it had been doing. I'm personally thinking it

is either a CPU problem (because its been overclocked for a year or

two, which i recently turned down), or a motherboard problem (because

sometimes things in USB ports will not respond). I've tried looking in

the BIOS settings for something out of the ordinary, but I don't

really know enough of what to look for."

does anyone have any ideas of what is wrong or what he should do?

I will relay the message to him thanks.

well if im understanding this correctly it just keeps restarting itself? if so i have had to experiences with this it is a virus which sucks or it is overheating very fast and it is shutting down to not kill itself or it could be the power supply dying but one of those

Well there ya go, the CPU got to tired of being OC'd and prolly pooped out on ya.....

Edit: Maybe trying booting it in safe mode and seeing if that'll work, if you cant boot in safe mode its hardware related.

he said he recently turned it down though

btw, what cpu is it?
Ya but when OC'ing anything it make sits life span alot shorter. It'd be like driving your car, going 180 for a few weeks then for one day driving at 100. You still took it past its limit so the strain was put on it one way or another.

try putting in a windows XP cd and format your hard drive....
Lmao why would you format your hd? Why not boot it in safe mode, and repair the corrupt windows files? Wouldn't take near as long and you dont lose anything.

i was thinking it wouldn't give him the option if it keeps restartingl. So i figured why not try a cd and see if it accepts it.....

Unless he has a fast computer, the format and install would take a while. If the computer was restarting wouldn't it still restart during the format/install?

Im just trying to help this guy out, and a format would be the last thing I would recommend.

he oc the cpu and he probably burnt it up or a lil piece of it so it is constantly restarting i dont think he is missing any files since it would popup if he did

well for one I was thinking it could be due to overheating/power supply. The first thing I am going to have him do is test the harddrive on another pc to see if it boots up, and test a hard drive from another pc to his motherboard to see if it boots up. Its hard to narrow down what the problem is, but the more ideas I get the better. Thanks guys.

I would agree, sounds very hardware related and if the CPU was oc'd for a long time, it kinda tells ya where to look.

I would open it up and take the CPU off and see if its fried lol, then look the mobo over and make sure nothin is fried. But lemme know what the proble turns out to be.
