Electrical problems with lasers usually don't surface for a few hours of use, a lot of times poor grounding can cause overcurrent through the laser, and it'll actually fry it. I know a lot of people were having that problem when sony first released the slimline ps2, and were using them with modchips designed for the older style ps2's for some reason. It wouldn't let the laser intensity adjust from the high level it used to initially read the contents of a cd, and it would just cook.
