Muslim thrown in jail over scarf

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- A head scarf landed a Muslim woman in jail Tuesday after she refused to remove it during a hearing at the Douglasville Municipal Court.
Lisa Valentine, also known by her Islamic name, Miedah, 40, was arrested for 'violating a court policy of no headgear', Chris Womack, deputy chief of operations for the Douglasville Police Department said on Wednesday.

Valentine was in court with a nephew who was facing a traffic citation. She was wearing a hijab, the head covering worn by Muslim women.

When she refused to remove it she was handcuffed and taken to Judge Keith Rollins' chambers. He cited her for contempt and ordered her held in jail for 10 days.

Omar Hall, Valentine's husband, said she had been released late Tuesday.

"I can't believe someone would do this in America," Hall said, adding the couple plans to file a lawsuit.

Many Muslim women cover their heads, following an Islamic custom. The practice has created conflict and headlines in courtrooms and schools across the country.

Kinda stupid IMO to throw her in Jail because of her scarf. They could of just asked her to leave.

Makes me think though, if someone showed up in court with one of those neck/head alignment braces, would they be asked to remove their headgear too?

The women wear them becuase muslim belief is that they should never be taken in front of another man unless that man is her husband or part of her family i believe, i asked a lady one time why she kept it on but that was a while ago but either way that is grounds for a lawsuit

I have been told to take my hoodie off she should have just taken it off they want to be able to see everyones face fully and I don't really blame them.

Now that Obama is president and the race card can no longer be pulled the muslims see this as a way to fight for 'rights' they supposedly are denied such as being able to wear something covering your face even though no one else can either.

In Chicago, we have tons of muslim women who walk into the courts for their son/nephews/etc 's court citation, and none of them have been asked to leave and/or take off their scarfs in order to continue through the hearing. A lawsuit is definately reasonable for such a case.

On the other hand, if she was Iranian(where they cover their whole face, hands with gloves, hair covered, and only thing showing is her eyes, that can be a reasonable to ask her to leave, but thrown in jail is pathetic. What has gone wrong with America....
