mtx 9500 or jl w7

w7 may sound better at lower watts, but also more money. Its hard to beat the 9500 if powered right in the right box. I have JL w6v2 and the mtx 8500 10's sounded better than what I bought. Plus w7 are more difficult to install with the way surround set up. H2's are good for all around Spl but they are power hungry, must have at least 1500-2000 watts for effective listening and they still have some rolloff and sloppiness.

The W7 will sound better at ANY power level. Lower BL and lower Cms distortion = lower distortion, period.

I sincerely doubt that installing a W7 will pose much of a problem for the average user.

I also disagree that ANY driver needs 1.5-2kW to sound good. That's just stupid. Drivers INCREASE in distortion AND compression with power, so your claim poses a clear contradiction to the facts of how loudspeakers function.

It's not the first time I've heard such a claim, but it remains false nontheless...

Apparently Ames Iowa is the end of the universe for car stereos, or you work for cyclone. None the less every woofer is different. I had an h2 12 that was getting 1000 watts, and it was sloppy and slow. The box was built to spec by my brother that went to the installer institute. The techs at Orion also told me that for best SQ the H2 needs between 2000 and 2500 watts for best sound.

As far as the w7 there will always be something better, maybe just not now, and its all relative anyway. Each person has diiferent listening tastes and preferences the w7 are overpriced as most JL stuff is. I can say that because half of my equip is JL. The average Joe is not going to go out and buy some w7's.

JL also recommends that only certified installers do the W7 and my brother and his installer buddies that sell them had special training for them. The "average user" could not always install right and it voids the warranty for them anyway.

I don't work for a car audio shop. I don't care what Orion's techs said, adding power will increase excursion, impedance, and distortion. It makes NO sense to say that a driver could sound better with more power. It isn't backed up by science, reason, or measurements.

Drivers become LESS linear as excursion increases. Some moreso than others, obviously, but that's always true.

It's possible someone may LIKE the way a driver sounds at a higher excursion level, but that is a far cry from actually saying that it's more accurate, which it clearly will NOT be.

This is my first MTX sub... hopefully not my last
