mp3 vs cd quality?

mp3 is a lossy format, which means that you do lose some sound quality when using an MP3 instead of a WAV. If you go with a higher bit rate MP3 you shouldnt' be able to tell the difference between that and a WAV. I'd go with 192kbps or 256kbps for an MP3. This is especially important if you have a really good sound system you're playing it on - because when your system is good, you'll hear all the crap that will come out of lower quality mp3s.

true, you can get some good sound quality out of 160kbps. Sometimes it all depends on what was used to do the encoding of the MP3 - some are better than others when it comes to quality. I like to get 192 when possible still, and I always rip at 256, just to keep it as true to the original as possible.

Remember that if your putting mp3's on a disc, you might as well burn it as mp3, because burning mp3's as .wav's would be pointless.... Also, mp3 @ 160 is terrible... I try to do 320 vbr when I rip myself, I consider 192 + the minimum for downloading... And you really can still tell the differance.

ive noticed a huge difference since i got my CDTs... some songs i just skip because they sound so terrible.

alot of the songs are ripped at low rates tbh, but thats not my fault. i might end up buying some discs, then ripping to 192+ to fit a few albums on each disc.

but cds do usually sound better, but if you can tell the difference between 320 and .wave origionals. you have problems. get a life =)

id rather loose 5\100 points of quality for ~30 more mb of disc space //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The problem with this, is that sometimes the people you "download" these 192kbps tracks from actually ripped them from a copied cd, and sometimes those cds could have been burnt from files encoded at 128kbps, or even worse 64kbps //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Best bet is to rip it yourself, from an origianal, and use 192 VBR //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Just my 2 cents

...or you could download a reliable and respected mp3 group's release. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Yeh well lets not get into that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsupwink.gif.129404938effda6ad9cca39e7f4b58a3.gif

But I mean most p2p networks bare the risk of poor quality *.mp3 being distributed under false bitrates.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah.....I've pretty much stopped downloading all together because the quality of what I was getting was //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsdown.gif.d22f25895e9b40f2300c953691dacfa2.gif I'd rather not have a song than have a poor quality copy of the song

Real CDs are always the best bet. If an mp3 file it captured at a high bit-rate which is higher than the CDs file, it still does not sound as good as the original CD. If you are planning on converting lots of CDs to a computer, capture using OGG Vorbis.

What I was going to say... But I guess it still stands, for the most part the mp3's people download are shiet.

Real CDs, all the way. Support the bands you love and all that.

Ditch MP3, it's a flawed format to begin with. OGG/Vorbis = bit rates and file sizes MP3 can't top yet. Every CD I buy is encoded at 512kbps VBR.
