Of course expensive. For the three of you to rent a decent place your going to drop at least $2500 a month and that doesn't include parking. Parking can be a big problem and you can expence to spend a few hundred a month to park. SF has the highest population of homeless in the nation so you will be panhandled and approached everywhere. If you thinking about riding a motorcycle year around you might want to think again. Lots of fog and grey along with steel light rail tracks on most streets make riding pretty hazardous (not to mention the insane traffic). It's pretty much a dirty big city like most. There are a lot of nice areas in the bay area if you can afford them but SF itself is something I would stay away from.

yeah, i think i am leaning towards the burbs somewhere. i want to get my MBA at Berkeley (if i can get in). is the other side of the bay less foggy?

If you want a REALLY nice place in cali, go down south by San Deigo, to the Coronado. damn nice little area. I'd expect it to be VERY expensive land there though. But no doubt very beautiful.

East bay is a little more affordable and much less foggy. SF is a micro climate because it's surround by 50 degree water. If your looking to go to Berkely check out Hayward, Castro Valley, San Leandro, Emeryville.
One thing to know is that if you are riding a motorcycle...lane splitting is LEGAL in california. Pretty much eliminates traffic problems if you are on a bike.
A big study also showed it is safer to lane split for a motorcyclist then sit in traffic.

wouldnt catch me dead in cali. but then again, im a country boy and i definatly wouldnt fit in with the fast paced lifestyle out that way

Just because its california doesnt mean it has to be a fast paced life style. Wow, kinda sucks for MikeOFtulsa to sound so ignorant but whew weee. Its like Driving a really nice and fast car. You can go fast and lose control or you can obey the speed limit. And yes that anology can apply to living in Cali. Really depends what you want out of cali.

People don't realize that there are huge areas of the state that are very sparsely populated. The number one industry in the state is agriculture. It's the largest food producing area in the world and is laced with small farming communities. All people hear about are San Francisco and LA. It's a huge state with many different climates and environments.
