Mounting head unit in boat - need help/advice

I took out the old stereo unit and am putting in a new one (single DIN size). There is a 3" by 8" hole in the plywood where the previous stereo was removed (the plywood is 1" thick).

I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about this, but I plan on cutting out a piece of wood 3x8" to fill this hole, and within that piece have another 2x7" slot cut out for the standard DIN size. This should then fit inside the 3x8" hole using wood glue and filler around the edges, then sand down. After that I plan on using the standard DIN sleeve that came with the head unit. For vertical support, perhaps I would run another piece of plywood along the bottom of the opening in the hole using L braces?

I have absolutely no clue if this is the right way to go about it, but I've been unable to find any resources about how to go about this. Perhaps there is already a solution out there for this? I could use one of the external kits, but then I'm left with a huge hole in the dash.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
