Most Awesomest Head Unit?

Outside of Alpine, I don't really know what's good and bad about Head Units...I've looked at a few Eclipse, but they just have that cheap appearance (read: chrome). They really as awesome as everyone says?

So what's some of the best out there? Internal amp doesn't matter, as I'm getting amps to power my speakers.

Just want something that can play MP3s, high preamp voltages, and has LOTS of control to it: detailed eq, levels, all that good stuff. More stuff I can tinker with, the better.

And...of course...looking good doesn't hurt either.

Bet it can hold more than a CD, and is able to be used anywhere.

Regarding the head unit question, we need a price range, or no one can offer informed suggestions.

Eclipse, Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine all make some really good Head Units. If you do your reaserch you can get a JVC, Sony that will also be a great unit.

Look into the Eclipse 8454 and Pioneer Premier DEH-860MP.

I hear the new Kenwoods are supposed to be pretty awesome, but I'm not going to get to optimistic about them until I've actually used one (never really cared for kenwood much)

Dont want Alpine or Eclipse? look into Pioneer/Premier highest offerings . I'd say Nakamici or Clarion models but their DSP is rather limited, Nak having none whatsoever....

i have the 9833 and the time correction on it is 2nd to none, eclipse decks come in 2nd but still dont come close to alpine

Only thing i see that I don't think I'd be fond of is that glide strip thing. Seems...gimmicy.

don't knock eclipse man on some real stuff. the one in my sig is my first one and damm it's amazing. i had a pioneer 960 right before this one and i think the eclipse sounds much better(all the same equipment).

I did a small sort of review about the 9853 and uploaded some pictures and a video of it here http://forums.caraudio.com/vb/showthread.php?t=93593&p=840024. The glide touch does not seem as gentle as everyone makes it out to be, it feels like it can take abuse and last a long time. I bought mine from crutchfield because for some odd reason, motorized faces always seem to put this image in my mind of them burning out.

he doesnt want a low voltage deck- and i'm not sure what Eclipse decks you've dealt with- my guess is none

Yea, I've never even seen an Eclipse. Are they that badass?
