More than one way to skin a cat... but which way is best?

I have two 12" subs with dual 4 ohm voice coils. I need to wire them to present a 4 ohm load to the amp. I can either parallel the coils on each woofer and then series the 2 subs or series the coils and parallel the woofers. Is one better than the other for any reason?
