I see this as you having four real options here.....
1: use paypal, and don't send money as a gift. If you are a buyer, all you have to do is report it as item not received or item not received in condition listed, and paypal will refund your money.
2: ask the seller to list the item for a buy it now price on
eBay, and pay with paypal. This way you are protected by
eBay and paypal if you are the buyer. This would be a pretty cheap option if you were really concerned as it'd probably only cost you $10-15 extra, and gives you a bit of peace of mind.
3: pay with your credit card using paypal so that you can file a chargeback on your card if the item is not received, or is not in listed condition. Again, this just gives you an extra level of protection.
4: offer a mod to pay him to provide services posted by the op.
Unless I've personally dealt with the seller before, I utilize at least one of these safety nets.....and some common sense (no pics with user name, etc...no sale).
