Modified cable modem? How are they legal?

You guys have them in your states? I read about someone getting arrested for mass-producing them, then i see them still being sold locally in my area. I was told the first version is going to get filtered out some time soon, but anyone use these? I use DSL locally, and got rid of cable because of how unstable it was locally, but i believe our house actually came with the cable modem service with our HOA, because i've had someone plug in a modem and the serviced worked with a regular modem. I'm thinking about buying one of the modded ones for 100 bucks though because they are supposed to have the internal limits removed. Anyone know about this? I know we have some electrical geniuses here, so i figured i'd ask before i waste 100 bucks on anything but a nice router.

an old buddy had one of those uncapped modems on his TimeWarner connection about 4-5 years ago...they basically came to his house with the authorities and he got in some pretty big trouble...ended up costing him something like $60k in fines and some time served...I dont know what it's like now...I wouldnt fawk with it myself...I'm just a pansy *** that abides by the rules though...

Uncapped cable modems are not legal... You are stealing bandwidth you aren't paying for.

Because they dont have enough to allow everyone to use it like that.

I have a few friends who flash modems and I guess you can get a linksys router and redo it so like instead of 1 modem in and 4 ports out that its 4 modems in and 1 port out so you can have 4 and get ungodly speeds haha

I dunno, these companies have strings attached to them. I believe Japan has speeds up to 50 Megs, and we just got 20 Meg locally recently. Wow 65k in fines, I wouldnt risk it.
