Moar computer pains. Anyone know bout screens?

So this morning, I go to turn on the ol lappy, and it doesn't turn on. Or so I thought. It makes all the sounds and everything seems to be working but the screen.

Well, I get it to start working, but only if the brightness is turned down all the way. The screen flickers, and its buzzing and making funny smells. Well, I've been led to believe that it's the inverter... the thingy that powers the backlight. I can still see a few things on the screen, but very dimly.

Do you think my diagnosis is correct? If so I can get an inverter for $35 and fix it and be done.

what about the back light itself?

what laptop...I can ask a tech for you since I work within a comp repair facility

Put a drill through the screen, that usually fixes the problem.

The backlight seems to function just fine. Occasionally, it will work for a few minutes and the backlight is fine. There's something down inside the lappy that is buzzing, though, and that seems to be the problem.

consensus is : take it apart and check for loose connections(apparently a common issue with the 1405)...if not then replace the inverter.

I've checked the connections-- I can get a few minutes out of it if I unplug the monitor and plug it back in.
