Mids bottoming out on one side, not sure what to try?

here is a test procedure: X indicates what has failed

the popping can occur if the RCA is "open-ended". i once got what sounded like clipping when i had male RCA ends loose on one side of Y-adapters (during some tests). it wasn't an RCA failure but just that the ends were not properly loaded. it sounded a lot like clipping.
