Whoa! Dug from the depths!
First off, yes that's a horrid install. In all honesty, I took on more than I should have for my first fiberglass install and by the time I got to the end I rushed it. I will be re-doing them but not until I get new mids (explained below).
IMO, the imaging is good. The speakers are on-axis. The range is 250hz (24db slope) - 5.3khz (12db slope). They are in an aperiodic enclosure, venting down into the dash. I have major polyfill in there along with some ensolite. They have no problem playing 250hz, but I wouldn't try too far below that.
For how cheap they are, I'm more than happy with their response. I know the term "for the money" is throw around alot, but these truly fall into a "great for the price" category. An excellent speaker for someone wantingn to test the waters on a 3-way active system, but not wanting to go in debt trying it.
My only issue with them is the low sensitivity. In that respect, they have a bit of trouble keeping up with the rest of the system at a decent volume. It was pretty noticeable at first, but after a week I got used to it and it's fine now. BUT, I am planning on getting some Scan Speak revelators to try there. I'll be firing them off-axis directly toward each other. That way I can clean up the install some, since firing on-axis makes the speakers protrude and not sit flush with the pillar.
If I don't like the revs I'll put these back in and try off-axis with them.
But, to sum it up, these are great speakers. Just make sure you do some homework on the install. Sending them about 25 w rms. That's all they need.
I'm running hybrid audio L1 tweeters, and dyn mw162 midbasses.
As for the pods... well, I'd like to cut them down and ultimately streamline them with the pillar so that it looks like part of it. I will be moving the tweeters out of the stock location to the pillars as well, firing directly across the dash (at each other; same as the Scans will be).
