MDF Rings question

I was wondering why MDF rings are used when mounting speakers? Are there any specific reasons other than clearance issues?

lots of reasons....clearance, solid mounting place, easier to get sealed, etc etc

In addition to what Jeremy already said, MDF is much more non-resonant than other materias that speakers are mounted to, like thin sheet metal and flimsy plastic spacers. In offers a better, more neutral base for the speakers to work with.

Some people use cutting board instead of MDF because MDF can have water damage.

what if i cover the area with dynamat including the area that the speaker will be mounted and mount the speaker on top of the dynamat. will it still be a significant difference than using mdf rings? i'm having some issues with clearance by using the mdf rings so i'm trying to find an alternative

Stating what thickness he should be using without knowing the vehicle the speakers or much space he is working with is pretty asinine.

Im doing a diy and need help on what type of screws can I use to mount the MDF rings to the metal door?

you can use drywall screws, just make pilot holes first other wise you'll split the wood.

you would be better off pre dilling the mdf and using a selftapping sheetmetal screw. drywall screws are coarse thread and loosen up over time.

I've used self-tapping sheet metal screws with good luck.
