Heartland Payment Systems hpy on Tuesday disclosed that intruders hacked into the computers it uses to process 100 million payment card transactions per month for 175,000 merchants.

Robert Baldwin, Heartland's president and CFO, said in a USA TODAY interview that the intruders had access to Heartland's system for "longer than weeks" in late 2008. The number of victims is unknown. "We just don't have the information right now," Baldwin said.

Tech security experts said the breach could set a record. Retail giant TJX lost 94 million customer records to hackers in 2007. With more than 100 million transactions per month, they could discover that several months' worth of transactions were captured, says Michael Maloof, chief technology officer at TriGeo Network Security.

Just stolen credit card numbers I've never really worried about. It's happened to me a few times, and it's really unavoidable no matter what you do. All it takes is for the person swiping it through to have it out of your sight at any time for even a split second as would be the case in a restaraunt. I consider it a minor inconvenience. All it entails is ordering a new card and filling out a fraud affidavit and that's the end of it, it's never cost me a dime. People obtaining access to credit acounts you already have isn't the problem, it's when they get your SSN and one or two other pieces of bio data off you and gain the capacity to obtain new credit in your name that you need to worry. And if they use a different address you may never even know until it's already far enough in arrears to **** your credit and you are tracked down by the creditor or the collection agencies. And THAT is what sucks...

There is no universal, easy, free, simple way to know any time and every time your SSN (regardless of what name it's attached to) pops up in the system anywhere that it's not supposed to unless the same people who allow it to happen all the time sell you their fraud insurance.
