It's possible to do it without a wiring harness but you'd have to cut into the stock wiring. It's only $12 and if you cheap out on it now, you'll regret it later.

As for how to actually install it, that's not all that difficult. Taking your dash apart is very vehicle specific but once you get that far it's just a matter of connecting the wires.

 
Get the harness. It will save you TONS of time and even more if/when you get a new deck. You can use the same harness and the wire colors will still match up. It just makes everything easier and you feel warm and fuzzy knowing it's done right.

There are a couple that SMD has tested, around $20.00 that should take the wattage from most any HU. If you are tapping into the speaker wires...
