Making a Website

I have an idea that i think is pretty **** good for a website that would consist of a no-ceiling number of pages similiar to instructiables. I suppose id invest some time to write some to get it started and then use submissions to continue growth of the website.

I'm a sophomore in college and have taken a basic class that is on networking and HTTP as well as ftp's remote connections linux and all that shit. I've created basic websites before in notepad.

I'll be honest though, I'm high as **** and procrastinating right now. I came up with this idea a few minutes ago. I just have a few questions. How do websites like instructables, digg, youtube, etc get started? Does it take a substancial investment or can a small website of this type build on itself? Logic tells me it would just die. Also what are the most common ways of advertising efficiently? And is it better to just write http or find a web building program (never used one)?

Upload all files in BINARY mode.

There is quite a bit more to it than making some basic css/html in notepad. youll want to know java and php as well, maybe asp but who really wants to use an access database for their hind end. I would suggest starting small with some ads and crap on the page, get some ads for your site put up on CA CACO SMD etc then it might grow and then pay someone to write the site or learn yourself. providing good information with well placed ads is key. maybe offer a small reward for goo instructions or some kind of benefit. It will be hard to compete with giants unless you specialize in one area. when you come down youll realize that its probably not feasible beyond the realm of a small business and personal satisfaction. I would use it but idk that the whole US would. Hell i could be wrong though. having a searchable website with how tos and pics and good advice for car audio would be something most would like. BCAE1 gets a lot of traffic, imagine if it had step by steps. You might even look into doing videos. its going to take a lot of work either way, probably more than youre willing to invest. there will be startup costs for the servers and domains too. having a forum section might not be a bad idea either.
