Mac OS not recognizing external HD

So today I picked up a new western digital mybook external HD. To sum everything up it is supposed to automatically start installing it's own software, but has yet to do so. It isn't recognizing the drive at all.

Any troubleshooting advice?

there isnt any software to install, it will just automatically work... how do you know its not recognizing it, becuase u cant see it in finder? if its brand new you're gonna have to format it first... open up Disk Utility and see if its showing up in there, then format it if it is

you may have to format it. try using the Disk Utility

There wasn't a little sheet in the box called "instructions", or perhaps a book called "manual"?

I've tried all of the above when the OS would recognize it (which took about 20 minutes worth of attempts at unplugging and plugging back in). Software is contained within the Hard drive itself.

The instructions are plug and play, mugen, go **** an e-chode.

The OS is fine and up to date.

Took the POS WD back to walmart and picked up a seagate, which by the way works flawlessly.

Indeed, but using the term "e-chode" generally strikes one as being upset, but not angry, therefore a period was an acceptable punctuation since you weren't angry, merely upset and slightly mad (which you obviously were considering the way you talked about your external HDD). There was little excitement in your post therefore little need for the exclamation mark, and at this point, I don't even know why we're talking about exclamation marks anyway since neither of us used one...

Were you using usb or fire wire ?

USB. The connection type on the back of the seagate feels ten times better than the WD. The WD had a looser feel on the connection.

I know I should have gone with lacie, but the WD was cheaper and also got good reviews. I chose to go with Seagate as they had earned good reviews as well and was similar in price to the WD.

So far the seagate is surpassing my expectations. I'm pleased for now.

Maybe I will include a firewire in next months budget. Is it really that much of a difference? I don't really need the external for anything but my music collection that has expanded beyond the capacity of the 80 gig internal.
