no it does that to keep the compressor lubed and to circulate the freon to keep moisture out of the system
then why only when the defrost is on? the mechanic at the dealership told me it's to keep the motor hotter in cold weather for the defroster.

 
I used to have the same 4.3 v6 in an 87 monte carlo. pretty strong for what it was. Eventually went to shit though. And now my A4LD in my Mazda Navajo is out, no car FTL, now I ride to school with GF for hours, blows for sure

 
so its not running freon through the system ALL the time, just when your defroster is on for like when you melt ice on your windows
i know the defroster is for melting ice on my windows;) that may surprise some people, however.
