Lost one side of my sound system

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and hope you don't mind some basic questions. My car is a jaguar xj with the premium sound system. the passenger side speakers all work fine but the driver side is little more than a whisper regardless of the source. Before I replace the amplifier is there an DIY way to confirm that it's the amp and not some other component? The amp is a separate unit.

Probably not an easy way to do this as it is a jaguar but you will want to connect a known working speaker to the factory speaker connections to verify whether its bad speakers or signal from the amp. This does happen from time to time in premium sound systems. The difference in left and right signal can make the difference of blowing up one side or the other side speakers. My gut thinks its speakers that are the problem. what year jag?

Sorry, should have stated: 2006 XJR. All right side speakers are fine. I can hear the left speakers but they have very, very little volume. If I have to connect another speaker by pulling the connectors do I have to make sure both sides of the amp have a load?

nope, but you typically want to test the speaker signal at the speaker location and not the amp. That basically gives you a starting point, working from one end to the other.

Very practical test! Thanks, I'll try that. Looking at the wiring diagram there are 4 speakers plus a sub-woofer on each side. I guess any one will do. I also saw that the cd changer in the trunk does not go through the audio unit but they both enter the amp via the same inputs. And the reduced output is the same regardless of the source. So, thankfully, I don't think it's the head.

Yeah I wouldnt think it would be the head either. Hopefully it is actually the amp, at least thats an easier fix.

I had this problem with my factory bose system and after I did some research, I discovered the problem was the hu, those models had a factory defect. I solved my problem, installing an aftermarket hu, no problem ever since.

try make sure it's not faded from the headunit towards one side or front and rear. (check this first)
