Yeah, don't worry about the rate of change, just figure out your calorie expenditure, and just start eating a diet that will land you in the result weight you're aiming for.
Eating only enough calories to sustain, say, a 150lb. male cannot sustain say, a 200lb. male, you will eventually weight 150lbs. and still be healthy.
Just don't base a weight loss plan around phyiscal activity and calorie intake that you can't sustain indefinitely without sacrificing good health.
"Dieting" = The lose, most people gain it back.
