Anyone local to Sacramento that can help?
I've been installing my first build over the past month in my 2003 Tacoma. Somewhere along the way, things started to sound bad and I don't know why. Listening to my build hurts my ears. It sounds hollow and has a pronounced mid range, but I can't seem to eq things out. I've been going back and forth between two HU's and although one sounds better than the other, they both sound bad.
Build steps:
- Replace stock head unit with Kenwood KDC-355U - improved sound
- Add Alpine MRV-F300 and Pioneer 10" downfiring, shallow mount sub -improved sound.
- Decided to upgrade HU for better tuning options and cleaner sound. Installed Kenwood KDC-X998. Sounded bad immediately. Began to hurt ears.
- Re-installed older Kenwood HU (KDC-355U) and although it sounded better, now also sounded bad.
- Installed Hybrid Audio Unity 6.5" and sound deadened doors - things still sound bad. Alternating head units makes no improvement.
It seems like things went way south when I put in that X998 head unit. I'm wondering if it did something to my amp, to make it sound like *****?
Can someone in Sacramento take a listen and tell me what they think of the sound and what may possibly be causing the trouble? I'm within the 30 days on the HU and amp, but I don't know which is the problem, if at all either is.
Thanks.
