Lets talk power wire!

Wow congratulations! I still have a few years left //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
Thanks, it's not so bad, the years go fast and the only thing you have to look forward to is working so enjoy it while ya can, haha.

I've just started my degree in engineering, but I still have the option to choose a specialization. Considering mechanical or electrical for sure. Another four years to go ... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

lol, what constant argument? Anytime I've seen this brought up it's because people are confused but as soon as you tell them it's only relevant with AC they understand...but if you would still like to flex your electrical knowledge for all to see, by all means go ahead?
It seems like almost every other day, another thread is started regarding cables, and a small argument ensues over the skin effect occurring. Over on CACO especially, but, if you haven't noticed it over here, then perhaps it is much more common and needed over on the other forum(s).

Ah, whatever, this week and next week are way too busy to do so. Lol. Perhaps later.

dont **** with bubba. he is an electrical engineer!

Same here, as well as an astrophysicist. But I have another year to complete astrophysics. I sort of took up that major half way through the EE degree and Space Studies minor :-/

Congratulations Bubba! What's next? I recently scored a paid internship with Boeing after an insanely involved interview process, I'll be heading out for the 6 month internship late this month.

Already secured a full time job, starting on May 21st //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Maybe the intelligence level here is just higher? (lol, yeah right)

But seriously, I've never seen anyone argue about this, just people who say they read it somewhere and "thought" that happens, then some mentions it's only in high frequency AC and the discussion ends. Why would anyone argue about this? It's as simple as looking up the skin effect on wikipedia and seeing that current density in a conductor is a function of frequency and depth...then again I know some people on this site just like to argue

Hehe, it's mostly based on the threads that come up regarding crimping/soldering terminals, and whether or not XX amount of CCA will be okay for certain setup as opposed to OFC.

Come to think of it, and while looking through said threads, almost all of the threads are on CACO! Lol.

Ah, I can't keep all 20 forums I peruse organized or in check in my head. It's the finals I tell you! Are you done already and just awaiting graduation? Or still in the midst of finals territory btw?

You would think, and hope the simple statement regarding high frequency AC power, a link to skin effect, or even getting to the explanation of current density would stop it, but maybe it is people just wanting to see their hands typing.

It surely could be the people wanting to argue, I'll link you to the two main offending threads if you'd like, but I don't dare throw ANT stuff in Goob's stuff :p

Just as much, it could be the older fellows that think they know electrical theory better than us younger fellows, even though we've specifically studied it, and they are simply going off of what they've heard through the years, and/or their years of being/competing in the 12v industry //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/*******.gif.a649d21efc0d1fd4890a6428166586c1.gif

Aluminum has about 59% of the conductivity of copper, so you need a bigger gage for the same rated current. It also oxidizes more than copper and should be coated with an anti-oxidant paste at the connections (a standard electrical supply item). Betcha all dinn know that.
Aluminum was used in house wiring in the 60's-70's but got outlawed because it proved to be a fire hazard over time. Connections came loose and created high resistance that make heat.
And this is why I don't really understand the huge trend to CCA.

Where do you have this job lined up buddy? That's exciting dude!

I'm contemplating whether or not to go through with this Boeing internship, or work as an engineer for Halliburton right away.

If I go with Boeing, I can finish up my astrophysics degree in WA, or I can make bank via Halliburton for a few months and then finish up. Lol. Have you heard about the stuff going on with Halliburton in the MidWest? Holy moly talk about starting at a ridiculous salary!

People cheaping out where they can of course, however in this case, it is on a component of the system/install that should really be done properly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

I should have graduated last semester but because I screwed around a bit I ended up having to wait and take 2 classes this semester *facepalm*

Only one of them has a final, it's tomorrow but it's also open book so yeah, I'm pretty much just waiting for graduation haha

Company up in Michigan called Fanuc Robotics. They do factory automation for pretty much every industry. Going to be a controls engineer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Also, never even heard of Halliburton?
